These 5 Common Foods You Probably Eat Every Week Have Been Linked to Increased Colon Cancer Risk

Colon cancer remains one of the most common cancers in the United States, with the American Cancer Society estimating about 106,590 new colon cancer cases in 2024. Recent research has kept attention on a short list of everyday foods that major health agencies and cancer groups say are linked to higher risk when eaten regularly.

Processed meats are the clearest red flag

Processed meats include bacon, hot dogs, sausage, deli turkey, ham, and salami, and they are the strongest food-related colon cancer risk on this list. In 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer classified processed meat as carcinogenic to humans, based in part on evidence for colorectal cancer.

That classification was not based on one small study. The IARC reviewed more than 800 studies from several countries before making that decision in October 2015. The group said each 50-gram daily portion of processed meat, about one hot dog or a few strips of bacon, was associated with an 18% increase in colorectal cancer risk.

In the U.S., these foods show up constantly in lunches, cookouts, and fast breakfasts. The Cleveland Clinic and MD Anderson Cancer Center both continue to list processed meats among foods people should limit because of colorectal cancer risk. Researchers have pointed to nitrates, nitrites, and compounds formed during processing as possible reasons.

Red meat is also linked to higher risk

Red meat includes beef, pork, lamb, and goat, and it comes up often in large nutrition studies on colorectal cancer. The American Institute for Cancer Research said evidence linking red meat to colorectal cancer is strong enough that people should limit intake to no more than 18 ounces cooked per week.

That guidance has been repeated for years because the research has stayed consistent. The WHO’s cancer agency said in 2015 that red meat was probably carcinogenic to humans, with colorectal cancer the clearest concern. The evidence was based on population studies that tracked diet patterns over time.

How the meat is prepared may also matter. The National Cancer Institute says high-temperature cooking methods such as grilling, pan-frying, and broiling can create chemicals called HCAs and PAHs. Those compounds have been studied for possible cancer effects, especially when red meat is cooked frequently at very high heat.

Sugary drinks have been showing up in newer research

Soda, sweet tea, sports drinks, and other sugar-sweetened beverages are not in the same category as processed meat, but newer studies have raised concern. A 2021 study in the journal Gut found that women who drank two or more sugary beverages per day in adulthood had more than double the risk of early-onset colorectal cancer compared with women who drank less than one serving per week.

That study drew from the Nurses’ Health Study II, a long-running U.S. project that began in 1989 and included more than 95,000 women. The researchers also found that higher sugary drink intake during adolescence was linked to increased early-onset risk. The study showed an association, not proof that soda directly causes cancer.

Even so, the findings got attention because colon cancer diagnoses in adults younger than 55 have been rising. The American Cancer Society said in its 2024 report that 20% of colorectal cancer cases now occur in people under age 55, up from 11% in 1995. That trend has pushed more researchers to study diet patterns common in the U.S.

Alcohol is a regular part of the conversation too

Beer, wine, and liquor are often discussed as drinks rather than foods, but alcohol is a well-established colorectal cancer risk factor. The National Cancer Institute states that drinking alcohol increases the risk of several cancers, including colon and rectal cancer, and risk rises with the amount consumed.

This is not limited to heavy drinking alone. The American Cancer Society says even low levels of alcohol intake have been linked with some cancers, though heavier use carries greater risk. In 2020, the U.S. Dietary Guidelines continued to define moderate drinking as up to one drink a day for women and up to two for men.

Researchers have proposed several biological reasons for the link. According to the National Cancer Institute, alcohol breaks down into acetaldehyde, a chemical that can damage DNA. Alcohol can also affect the body’s ability to absorb nutrients and may increase inflammation, both of which have been studied in relation to colorectal cancer.

Ultra-processed foods are getting closer scrutiny

Packaged snack cakes, instant noodles, frozen pizza, chips, and many fast grab-and-go foods fall into the ultra-processed category used in nutrition research. A 2022 study published in The BMJ found that men with the highest intake of ultra-processed foods had a 29% higher risk of colorectal cancer than men with the lowest intake.

The study followed more than 200,000 U.S. adults through three large cohorts, including the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Researchers said not every ultra-processed food showed the same pattern, and the results differed by sex and product type. That means the category is broad, and scientists are still sorting out which products may matter most.

For shoppers and families, the practical takeaway is narrower than the headlines. Major groups including the American Cancer Society and AICR continue to emphasize patterns built around vegetables, fruit, beans, whole grains, and limited processed meat, red meat, and alcohol. Those recommendations remained in place through 2024 as U.S. researchers continued tracking early-onset colon cancer trends.
