Tiny bits of plastic are turning up almost everywhere scientists look. That includes bottled water, table salt, seafood, produce and even the human body.
Health experts say people cannot avoid microplastics entirely, but they can lower exposure with a few simple habits. The biggest gains tend to come from changing how food is heated, stored and packaged at home.
Heating food in plastic remains one of the clearest risks

One of the most widely repeated recommendations from food safety and environmental health researchers is simple: do not heat food in plastic unless the container is clearly designed for it. Even then, many experts say glass, ceramic or stainless steel are safer bets for regular use. Heat can increase the release of tiny plastic particles and chemicals from containers, lids and wraps into food.
That advice has grown stronger as studies have found microplastics in common kitchen settings. Research published in recent years has shown that plastic food containers and disposable packaging can shed particles during normal wear, with heat and friction making that worse. Babies and young children may face especially high exposure when formula or food is prepared in plastic containers, according to several published studies that drew concern from pediatric researchers.
For most households, the easy fix is swapping a few routines. Move leftovers into glass containers before microwaving. Use a plate or paper towel instead of plastic wrap over hot food. If takeout arrives in a plastic tub, transfer it before reheating. These changes are inexpensive, easy to understand and line up with advice many toxicologists already give their own families.
Bottled water and packaged foods can add up over time

Drinking water is another major source of exposure that comes up again and again in the research. A 2024 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences estimated that a liter of bottled water could contain an average of about 240,000 detectable plastic particles, many of them in the nanoplastic range. The findings drew wide public attention because bottled water is a daily staple for millions of Americans.
Scientists have long found microplastics in both bottled and tap water, but bottled water often contains more. Part of that may come from the bottle itself, the cap and the bottling process. The study’s authors said the newer technology used in their work allowed them to detect far smaller particles than older methods could reliably count, which may help explain why newer estimates look so much higher than earlier ones.
That does not mean tap water is perfect or identical from place to place. But for many people, using a reusable stainless steel or glass bottle filled from filtered tap water can cut down on plastic contact and also save money. Cutting back on heavily packaged foods can help too. Individually wrapped snacks, ready meals and foods stored for long periods in plastic all create more chances for tiny particles to enter what people eat.
Kitchen tools matter more than many people realize

Some of the most practical changes have nothing to do with major lifestyle overhauls. They come from replacing worn plastic items in the kitchen that are used every day. Scratched food storage containers, old blenders, plastic cutting boards and black plastic utensils can all shed material over time, especially when exposed to heat, oil or repeated use.
Researchers have paid particular attention to black plastic kitchen tools because some products have been found to contain recycled electronic waste additives. While not every black plastic spatula or takeout fork poses the same risk, consumer advocates and scientists have said there is enough uncertainty to justify caution. Several experts now suggest choosing wood, stainless steel or silicone cooking tools from reputable brands when replacing older items.
Cutting boards are another easy place to start. A 2023 study in Environmental Science & Technology reported that both plastic and wooden boards release particles during use, but plastic boards can contribute microplastic fragments directly into food as they wear down. Home cooks do not need to throw everything out overnight. But replacing heavily scarred plastic boards and chipped containers is a realistic step that may reduce exposure without changing how a family eats.
Food choices can help, even if plastic is now widespread

Microplastics have been found in seafood, honey, sugar, beer, fruits and vegetables, making it clear there is no single food group to avoid. Scientists say contamination happens across the food chain, from polluted water and soil to processing, packaging and transport. That is why experts tend to focus on reducing exposure where people have the most control, rather than promising a perfect plastic-free diet.
Fresh foods with less packaging are usually a better place to start. Buying loose produce instead of pre-cut fruit in plastic tubs can reduce contact points. Choosing dried beans, rice or oats from lower-packaging options may also help, though availability varies by store and region. Washing produce is still important for dirt, bacteria and surface debris, even if it will not remove every microscopic particle.
Seafood advice is more nuanced. Shellfish such as mussels and oysters are often discussed because they are eaten whole and can contain particles from the water they filter. But nutrition experts do not recommend dropping seafood altogether, since fish and shellfish also provide protein and nutrients many Americans need. The broader message is moderation, variety and less reliance on ultra-processed, heavily packaged meals.
What health officials know, and what they still do not

Public health agencies and medical researchers agree on one key point: microplastics are real, widespread and worth studying closely. They have been detected in human blood, lungs, placentas and other tissues in recent years, though researchers are still working out what different levels of exposure mean for long-term health. The science is moving fast, but it is not settled enough for officials to assign one simple daily limit.
That uncertainty can be frustrating, yet it has not stopped doctors from giving practical advice. Many recommendations are based on a basic risk-reduction idea used across public health: if an exposure is common, hard to avoid and potentially harmful, lowering it where possible makes sense. That is especially true for children, pregnant people and anyone with high exposure to packaged or reheated foods.
The good news is that the most useful changes are not extreme. Drink less bottled water when safe tap water is available. Reheat food in glass or ceramic. Replace damaged plastic kitchenware and choose fresher, less-packaged food when practical. None of those steps can eliminate microplastics from modern life, but together they can significantly cut how much plastic people are likely taking in every day.
