That is why produce guides often separate “ethylene producers” from “ethylene sensitive” items.

The fruits most often named as poor neighbors for bananas are apples, pears, peaches, plums, nectarines, kiwis, mangoes, and avocados, according to Michigan State University Extension and the University of Minnesota Extension. In a typical U.S. kitchen kept around 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit, these fruits can ripen faster when stored in the same bowl. Extension guidance does not put all fruit on that list, but it consistently identifies climacteric fruits that respond strongly to ethylene.

For shoppers in any state, the confirmed takeaway is simple: bananas should be stored away from fruit you want to keep firm for several more days. Still, extension agencies in California, Minnesota, and Michigan all give similar advice on separating bananas from other fast-ripening produce.

Some fruits are less affected. Citrus like oranges, lemons, and limes are generally not listed among the most ethylene-sensitive fruits, and grapes and berries are usually stored separately for different freshness reasons, according to extension storage charts. That means the highest-risk pairing is not bananas with every fruit, but bananas with apples, pears, stone fruit, kiwi, mangoes, and avocados.
