Microplastics have been detected in drinking water, seafood, salt, and even human blood in studies published by researchers in recent years. In kitchens across the U.S., that has turned routine choices about storage, cookware, and packaging into a practical way to lower one everyday source of exposure.
1. Swap plastic food containers for glass or stainless steel

Consumer Reports said in February 2024 that reducing contact between food and plastic, especially during heating, is one reasonable step for households concerned about microplastics. Glass containers from brands like Pyrex and Anchor Hocking, along with stainless steel lunch containers, avoid the plastic interior that can shed particles as it ages.
The concern rises with wear and heat. A 2023 study published in Environmental Science & Technology found that plastic food-contact materials can release both microplastics and nanoplastics under normal use conditions, including repeated opening, closing, and washing.
For home cooks, the practical shift is simple. Use glass for leftovers, stainless steel for packed lunches, and keep older scratched plastic tubs for nonfood storage if needed.
2. Swap microwaving in plastic for ceramic or glass

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln and several public health groups have long advised against heating food in plastic unless the manufacturer specifically states it is microwave-safe. Even then, researchers note that “microwave-safe” refers to heat tolerance and not necessarily to zero particle shedding.
A 2023 study from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln found that microwaving some plastic baby food containers and reusable pouches released millions of microplastic and nanoplastic particles per square centimeter. That research focused on infant feeding items, but it reinforced a broader point about heat accelerating breakdown.
For everyday kitchens, the lower-plastic option is straightforward. Move leftovers to a ceramic bowl, tempered glass dish, or plain glass jar before reheating.
3. Swap black plastic utensils for wood, stainless steel, or silicone

Black plastic spatulas, spoons, and takeout containers have drawn scrutiny because some are made with recycled electronics plastic. Consumer Reports and Toxic-Free Future both highlighted this issue in 2024 after testing found flame-retardant chemicals in some black plastic kitchen items sold in the U.S.
That issue is not identical to microplastic shedding, but it points to the same broader concern about degraded or contaminated plastic in food contact products. Older utensils also tend to show wear near hot pans, which increases surface breakdown over time.
Wooden spoons, food-grade silicone spatulas, and stainless steel turners are common replacements. In most U.S. grocery and cookware stores in 2024, each of those options is widely available at price points similar to midrange plastic tools.

5. Swap plastic cutting boards for wood when possible

Plastic cutting boards are common in U.S. kitchens because they are light, cheap, and dishwasher-friendly. But a 2023 study in Environmental Science & Technology estimated that cutting on polyethylene and polypropylene boards can generate measurable microplastic fragments during ordinary knife use.
Researchers calculated that the amount could reach tens of millions of particles per year depending on board type and use frequency. That figure varies widely by household, but it put a number on a source many people never considered.
Wood cutting boards are not maintenance-free, and food safety still matters. The practical takeaway is to replace deeply scarred plastic boards and consider wood boards for bread, produce, and other lower-risk prep tasks.
6. Swap plastic-wrapped tea bags and pods for loose tea or simpler formats

Some tea bags are sealed with plastic, and some premium pyramid bags are made partly or entirely from plastic mesh. A 2019 McGill University study found that steeping one plastic tea bag at brewing temperature released billions of microplastic and nanoplastic particles into water.
Single-serve coffee pods also use plastic in many designs, though exposure levels vary by brand and brewing system. Public health researchers have not issued one universal number for all pods, but packaging waste and heat contact remain part of the discussion.
Loose-leaf tea with a stainless steel infuser is one clear alternative. Paper tea bags without plastic mesh and coffee makers that use stainless steel or paper filters also reduce direct contact with heated plastic.
7. Swap bottled water habits for filtered tap water in glass or steel bottles

A 2024 study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences estimated that a liter of bottled water could contain an average of about 240,000 detectable plastic particles, most of them in the nanoplastic range. The researchers analyzed three popular bottled water brands, though they did not name them publicly.
That does not mean all tap water is particle-free, and water quality varies by city and state across the U.S. But the study added to years of data showing bottled water is a regular source of plastic exposure for many consumers.
For daily routines, a home filter certified to a relevant NSF standard and a reusable stainless steel or glass bottle can cut repeated packaging contact. The broad public-health message from NIH and other researchers is consistent in 2024: reducing plastic use around food and drinks is a practical exposure step while science continues to develop.
