Pennsylvania drivers keep hearing the same thing: Buc-ee’s might finally be on the way. Right now, though, the bottom line is simple.
There is still no confirmed Buc-ee’s location anywhere in Pennsylvania. The excitement is real, but the evidence has not turned into an official project.
The biggest rumor was officially shut down
The most talked-about Pennsylvania rumor centered on Plainfield Township in Northampton County, near the Lehigh Valley. In early May 2026, a letter dated May 4 started spreading on social media and appeared to show Buc-ee’s contacting the township planning board about a possible travel center. That quickly sent fans into speculation mode.
Local officials moved fast to knock it down. Plainfield Township Manager Paige Stefanelli told reporters the document was fake and said the township had never received any correspondence from Buc-ee’s. That public denial became the first major sign that the rumor had gone too far.
Buc-ee’s then said the same thing directly. On May 15, 2026, general counsel Jeff Nadalo said the company had no plans to open a location in Plainfield Township and that any circulating letter of intent tied to the rumor was not valid. At that point, the biggest Pennsylvania Buc-ee’s story of the spring was effectively over.
Why billboards fueled so much speculation
Another major source of buzz came from Buc-ee’s billboards seen along the Pennsylvania Turnpike. In fall 2024, one was spotted near the Reading and Morgantown exits around mile marker 291 in Lancaster County. For many drivers, that looked like a clue that Pennsylvania was next.
The timing added even more intrigue. Around the same period, a similar billboard appeared along the New Jersey Turnpike, prompting more talk that Buc-ee’s was preparing a broader Mid-Atlantic push. For a brand with a cult following, even a billboard can set off a wave of online chatter.
Still, advertising does not equal construction. Industry observers have noted that Buc-ee’s often uses billboards to build brand awareness and social media buzz in travel corridors near areas of expansion. In other words, a sign on the roadside can mean interest in drivers, not necessarily a store in that exact location.
Buc-ee’s is getting closer to the state line
What is helping the rumors survive is that Buc-ee’s really is moving closer to Pennsylvania. In Virginia, the Mount Crawford location in Rockingham County opened on Interstate 81 on June 30, 2025. That store sits about 120 miles south of the Pennsylvania border.
Ohio is now part of the picture too. Buc-ee’s opened its first Ohio location in Huber Heights near Dayton on April 6, 2026, giving western Pennsylvania drivers a new nearby option. That marked another step in the chain’s steady eastward and northern growth.
There is also another Ohio project advancing. In March 2026, Mansfield Mayor Jodie Perry announced an annexation petition for a Buc-ee’s at the Interstate 71 and State Route 39 interchange in Richland County. In early June 2026, Mansfield City Council unanimously approved a development agreement for the 37.5-acre project, with a company representative targeting a Q2 2028 opening.
Why Pennsylvania makes sense, but remains complicated
On paper, Pennsylvania checks a lot of boxes. The state has heavy traffic corridors including I-76, I-78, I-79, I-80, I-81 and I-95, along with major road-trip routes and dense population centers. It also has a strong convenience-store culture shaped by chains such as Wawa, Sheetz and Rutter’s.
That same strength could also make the market harder to crack. Buc-ee’s would be entering one of the most competitive convenience-store landscapes in the country, and drivers would inevitably compare every new location to brands they already know well. Even for a popular chain, that is a serious challenge.
Then there is the size of the project itself. Modern Buc-ee’s locations can span roughly 74,000 to 75,000 square feet and include about 120 fueling positions, large parking areas and major traffic upgrades. For now, Pennsylvania has the rumors, the billboards and the demand, but it still does not have an official announcement, opening date or confirmed site.
