Treacle scones are a delightful addition to any afternoon tea or breakfast spread. These scones combine the richness of black treacle with the warmth of cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg to create a deeply flavored treat. With their golden crust and soft interior, they’re perfect served warm with butter, jam, or clotted cream.

Ingredients

  • 360g (2 ¾ cups) self-raising flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 2 tbsp light brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 60g (¼ cup + 1 tsp) cold butter, chopped
  • 2 tbsp black treacle
  • 200ml (¾ cup + 2 tbsp) whole milk (plus extra for brushing, optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Baking Tray

  • Line a baking tray with baking paper. Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F).

Step 2: Combine Dry Ingredients

  • Sift the self-raising flour into a large mixing bowl.
  • Add the light brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Whisk well to evenly distribute the spices.

Step 3: Incorporate the Butter

  • Add the chopped butter to the dry ingredients.
  • Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Step 4: Heat the Wet Ingredients

  • In a small saucepan, gently warm the milk and black treacle over medium heat. Stir continuously until fully combined but do not let it boil.

Step 5: Form the Dough

  • Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Gradually pour in the milk and treacle mixture.
  • Mix with a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms. Use your hands to gently bring the dough together if it feels sticky.

Step 6: Shape and Cut the Dough

  • Lightly flour a clean surface and turn out the dough.
  • Shape the dough into a ball, then press or roll it into a disk approximately 1 inch thick.
  • Use a round cutter dipped in flour to cut out scones. Regather and reshape the dough as needed.

Step 7: Bake the Scones

  • Place the scones onto the prepared baking tray, leaving a little space between them.
  • Optional: Brush the tops with milk for a glossy finish.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15–18 minutes, or until the scones are risen and golden.

Step 8: Cool and Serve

  • Transfer the scones to a wire rack to cool slightly.
  • Serve warm with butter, jam, clotted cream, or your favorite toppings.

FAQs

Can I use a substitute for black treacle?

Yes! If you don’t have black treacle, you can use molasses or dark corn syrup as a substitute. The flavor may differ slightly, but the scones will still be delicious.

How should I store leftover scones?

Store cooled scones in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To reheat, warm them in the oven at 180°C (350°F) for 5–7 minutes.

Can I freeze these scones?

Absolutely! Freeze the scones once cooled in an airtight bag or container for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature, then reheat as desired.
